Frequently Asked Questions
What is key management?
When the term is used in the access control and physical security field, key management refers to the idea of managing, controlling, and monitoring the possession and use of keys by credentialed individuals. In a typical scenario, individuals are granted access to certain keys at certain times/days, and/or for pre-set lengths of time. The individual presents a credential to the key management system (i.e. prox/smart card, biometrics, pin, or some combination) and is then granted access to keys which have been pre-assigned to him/her by the administrator. Alarms and reports are generated according to exceptions (keys kept out too long, etc.). The system can be stand alone or networked/web based. What is RFID?
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is the technological field of identifying a person or thing by means of radio frequency tags. The tags are virtually infinitely unique and are read by RFID readers. Applications for RFID abound in our society. The medical, transportation, logistics, and security fields are just a few examples. A major advantage of RFID technology in the key management arena is that the tags and readers operate contactlessly. This means that there is no wear to the key tag, even under heavy use. Another major advantage of RFID key tags is that fact that they are virtually indestructible, and not affected by dirt, rough handling, or moisture.
